Program Specialty Descriptions & Career Terms
Aerodynamics
Aerodynamics is a science that deals with the motion of air as it acts upon bodies, such as airplanes, while in motion. Aerodynamics is a major factor when determining the speed and performance efficiency of an aircraft. Aircraft that are smoother and slimmer tend to have less drag than larger, more blunted aircraft and can fly faster and more efficiently.
Aircraft On Ground (AOG)
Aircraft On Ground (AOG) is used to convey a sense of urgency when obtaining the parts and services needed to perform an aircraft repair. In order to get the aircraft back in service in a timely fashion, all repair elements must come together as soon as possible and within safe parameters.
Aircraft Systems
Encompasses all mechanical parts, electrical networks and instruments that work in concert to keep an aircraft in safe operation. Aircraft systems specialists are in charge of maintaining the safe and efficient operation of these systems.
Airframe & Powerplant Technician (A&P)
Airframe & Powerplant Technicians (A&Ps) are in charge of keeping Aircraft in safe operation. A&Ps have the knowledge-base and skills to service and overhaul all components and systems an aircraft.
Airworthiness Directive
Issued by certified authorities to correct any flaws or defects in an aircraft. These corrections are required before any further air operation is allowed for the aircraft or within a designated time period.
Aviation Maintenance
Aviation maintenance includes the procedures and technology involved in monitoring, diagnosing and repairing avionic systems.
Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT)
Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) work with ground operations to service and maintain aircraft and aircraft systems. AMTs also administer routine inspections of aircraft systems and serve administrative functions.
Aviation Management
Aviation managers are in charge of the safety and efficiency of aviation teams, equipment and facilities. The Aviation management team is ultimately accountable for the safe and efficient operation of aircraft systems and crews.
Aviation Safety
Aviation safety includes the systems and skills necessary to maintain safe running aviation equipment, safe environments and the ability to react to dangerous situations.
Avionics
Avionics and Electronics specialists are in charge of knowing, designing and implementing the latest technologies that go into the operation and maintenance of aircraft systems.
Engine Systems Inspection
The engine systems inspector is in charge of the trouble-shooting and maintenance of aircraft engines and powerplant systems.
Fixed Based Operator (FBO)
Fixed Based Operators (FBOs) are in charge of running ground operations that service and fuel aircraft and aircraft personnel.
