Program Specialty Descriptions
Accelerated Flight School
An accelerated flight school is an institution that offers professional pilot courses that can be completed in a relatively short time frame, usually 6-8 months.
Aviation Communications
Aviation communications involves the systems and techniques used to exchange and distribute key information in flight situations.
Avionics & Instrument Systems
Avionics and Instrument Systems are comprised of the tools, instruments and language involved in aviation operations.
Certificate
A certificate is an awarded document that contains specific information about a pilot's abilities. This would include the class of plane and/or operations type the pilot has been trained and approved for.
Class
Class constitutes a specific grouping of aircraft that share similar operational characteristics or identities (i.e. single engine planes).
Crew Resource Management (CRM)
Crew Resource Managers, or CRMs are in charge of providing instruction to crewmembers on how to use their capabilities and resources in the most efficient way.
Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)
Distance Measuring Equipment, or DME is an important part of navigations systems in that they quantify distances from the aircraft to ground systems.
Dual
A dual flight is a flight that consists of the student and the instructor. A student's first solo flight would only consist of the student alone.
FAA Designated Flight Examiner
The FAA Designated Flight Examiner, or checkride is FAA certified and rated to administer oral and practical exams.
First Officer
The First Officer rank is a very high rating earned through vigorous training and testing. The First Officer can then take the responsibility of leading flight teams.
Flight Attendant
Flight attendants are in the service of aircraft passengers, facilitating their safety, comfort and informational needs. Flight attendants also may in charge of tending to the needs of pilots and flight crews.
Flight Instruction
Flight instructors impart knowledge and skills necessary for aircraft operation and are in charge of awarding certificates and ratings.
Pilot
A pilot is an individual who operates an aircraft. There a variety of pilot class levels in the avionics industry.
Pilot-In-Command (PIC)
The Pilot-In-Command is in charge of an aircraft in terms of operation and safety. The PIC may be in charge of a pilot crew as well as the aircraft itself.
Rating
A rating is a specific qualifier or privelege added to a pilot's certificate upon completion of necessary training.
University Aviation Program
A program or department of at a larger university that offers training and development of aviation skills and knowledge.
